I’ve had two speeding tickets in a week, and frankly I’m over it.
The first one was an alleged 64km/h in a 60 zone, and that sucked. This second one, though, is for 70km/h in a 60 zone, which is 3 demerit points and a heftier fine. The interesting point is that the first fine had a 3km/h adjustment, whereas the second one only had a 2km/h adjustment… without which, I’d be in a lower bracket, saving $80 and 2 demerit points. How convenient!
I’ll be contesting this and asking whether they simply make up their tolerances from day to day or whether they’re just targeting people who do a shitload of driving all over the city and do occasionally go over the limit (without tailgating, failing to indicate, cutting people off, etc… but only speed seems to be relevant in preventing accidents, hoho).
Mopsy had her 10,000km service today, and I had the greasemonkeys tighten a few screws inside the cockpit - some rattles seemed to appear around the time Steve and I headed down to the Great Ocean Road. A coincidence I’m sure.
Anyhow, the seat no longer squeaks (seat rails were greased), the B-pillar (right next to your head as you drive) doesn’t rattle when you’re travelling over rough roads… I’m happy.
What made me even happier was handing the key back for the loan car. It was a 6-month old Mazda 6 with only 6,500 kms on the clock, and it was bloody awful. Automatic transmissions haven’t gotten any better since Mum’s old 1984 XE Falcon; they might have more gears but they still suck power and get in the way unless you’re completely uninterested in driving the car. I kept an eye on the trip computer and found I was using more fuel in the 6 than I was in my turbo 3, simply because I was thrashing the engine to try to get some performance out of it.
Because the 6 didn’t have a line-in for the iPod, I pulled out the Mighty Boosh CD set I bought from Amazon UK a couple months ago and listened to that. I think I laughed more the second time through… great stuff.
I stayed off the internet all day and watched the MacWorld keynote ‘cold’ this afternoon. Finding that no new iPods were launched, I ordered my own 80Gb model. It’s white cos I’m oldschool, baby.
Steve and I spent an excellent Saturday afternoon hustling our vehicles about, out past Warburton way. The only slightly off moment was walking into a Marysville café for coffee and suddenly wondering if the proprietor thought we were a gay couple.
Anyhow, here’s the crappy video I shot. I’m going to see what I can do about making or buying a proper mount for the camcorder to avoid Shake-O-Vision.
The best pics Steve and I took of Mopsy on Tuesday can be found in this thread.
An example of how we were not driving can be found here. I can’t begin to describe how horrific this video is, especially when you catch a glimpse of the P-plate at the bottom left.
Steve and I just got back from Apollo Bay this evening. We left from the service station just before the Westgate Bridge at 12pm, thrashed the 3MPS and VZ Monaro down the Great Ocean Road, stopped along the way for photo opps, then came back via the Otway National Park (which is gorgeous) and Colac (which is… not so much).
My average mileage was a tad under 11L/100km, Steve got 12.6L/100km, which is excellent for a V8. Mine wasn’t so hot because I was on boost most of the time… but I’ve said too much…
