It burns!

Published by Paul under Geekery

I woke up this morning to the worst scenario a geek can imagine: no internet! A bit of fiddling showed that although I could ping a site by IP, I wasn’t getting any DNS resolution. Hrmm, maybe there’s an issue with the OpenDNS servers that I entered into my router a couple of days ago to get around my ISP blocking a torrent site?

I changed the values back and restarted the connection - BOOM. No authentication from SuperShite. Looks like their authentication servers have fallen over again. No chance of it coming good until a customer calls them and complains, I’d imagine.

How am I going to update my blog now? What will become of our hero?

OMG! It just started working. Disaster averted.

Timezone madness

Published by Paul under Geekery

I love Windows XP. I love the amount of care and effort put into it by Microsoft, especially the setup process.

Language?

English (Australian)

Location?

Australia

Here, your suggested timezone is…. TIJUANA, MEXICO.

Seriously. Why has OS X gotten this simple detail right from day one and XP still does stupid shit? Hell, even Linux asks which Australian timezone I am in.

Stupid spammers

Published by Paul under Geekery

Okay, my ‘you don’t need to register and be logged in to comment’ experiment has failed. The spam is coming too fast for me to want to deal with, so the restrictions are back in place. Log in, or comment ye not!

I’m going in!

Published by Paul under Geekery

I have my aunt’s HP laptop to fix tonight - something is stopping Windows from booting (bluescreening with an UNMOUNTABLE VOLUME error). I’m checking the hard drive for physical errors, then I’ll go in and check the file system structure.

This is important as it’s the only way that Jill can communicate with the outside world. Plus, as she pointed out tonight, she can’t put her bets on without her laptop. :)
And by the way, I’m experimenting with turning off the need to register to post comments. If I start getting wads of spam I’ll turn it on again but for now, enjoy.

Theme fall down go boom

Published by Paul under Geekery

Note to self: Don’t upgrade Wordpress at work. Things invariably go wrong. Enjoy the CRAZY THEME until I get some time to fix things. :)
Oh, and Steve should be super-excited to know that I took photos on the weekend.

Maybe the worst thing I’ve ever seen on the net

Words fail me.

This is a company with more money than most small countries. If you can make it all the way through this video (and it’s only 3 minutes long, how hard can it be?) you’re a stronger man than I.

It’s got a wonderful defense mechanism. You don’t dare kill it.

Try your browser with the weird and wonderful Acid3 test*!

IE6: 12/100
IE7: 12/100 (maybe this is running in IE6 compatibility mode??)
Firefox 2.0.0.12: 54/100
Firefox 3.0 beta 4: 68/100
Safari 3.1: 75/100
Apple WebKit nightly build r31157: 93/100

How does your browser of choice rate?

* The Acid tests attempt to prove how well your browser copes with CSS, the system that provides advanced page layout features to web sites.
