My latest computer

Published by Paul at 12:44 pm under Macs

I couldn’t help myself - I got another Mac.

Check out these über specs!

* A 68040LC processor running at a blazing 25Mhz!
* 36 — yes, that’s right, 36 megabytes of memory!
* A staggeringly-large 200MB hard drive!

LC475

That’s right kids, this computer has less power and storage than the iPod in my pocket. :)

My boss had it in the boot of his car and I couldn’t resist asking for it. The best aspect of it is the excellent Apple Extended Keyboard with the oldschool clicking keys - probably worth more to an enthusiast than the rest of the machine put together. The machine has a build date of August 1993, so the mouse and keyboard have held up brilliantly.

I had to spend $25 on a replacement PRAM battery (without which the video circuitry wouldn’t even power up), and I am trying to win a network card on ebay (of course it’s horribly non-standard, but very cheap! I’m currently the winning bidder with my $1 bid).

I am kinda thinking of putting Linux onto it, but Linux needs a beefier CPU with a floating-point unit. A replacement CPU will cost me around $15, so maybe I’ll just stick with System 7.1 for a while.. :)
