I did too much over the weekend. Not only did I spend Friday organising the whole car thing (and that’s another post in itself), but I drove to Ballarat and back to pick up a whipper-snipper, added some boards to the front of the porch to stop one of the dogs running around the neighbourhood like the little hussy she is and crawled around underneath the house like a dusty lizard running CAT-5 cable between the geekroom and the home theatre room. No longer do we have to remember to step over a red cable snaking across the hall as we creep to the toilet in the middle of the night. My neck feels like I’ve been strangled today, though.
Oh, and the geek room is starting to look somewhat habitable. It needs some furniture to hold all the stuff sitting on the floor in boxes, but I can actually stand in there for a minute or so without screaming. I’ll be able to set up the PC desktop soon, though I’m buggered if I know what I’d do with it. I don’t play Everquest anymore and I’m not interested in the PC gaming scene. The only real use for it right now is playing WMV3 files that VLC won’t play on OS X.

I pride myself on taking care of my servers and trying to be a good citizen on the net. Imagine my horror then, when I checked my Webalizer logs on Saturday and found my Apache server had been hit nearly 16,000 times during the course of the day. I certainly don’t get that kind of traffic, so I took the server down and started investigating.
Here’s what I found:

Rinse and repeat, similar IP addresses, all through the day.

I used to play Everquest (way, way too much). The game was run by Sony Online Entertainment (SoE), who are notorious for shocking customer support. This might be a new low for them, though.
I wish them luck with Everquest 2 with this kind of behaviour from their support staff.

A Spanish-language version of Windows XP, destined for Latin American markets, asked users to select their gender between “not specified,” “male” or “bitch,” because of an unfortunate error in translation.
You couldn’t make this shit up.

So, this morning my girlfriend and I got up stupidly early, walked the dogs then headed into the city to set up an ING Direct account for the new car. We also specifically listed my PowerBook in our contents insurance so it’s covered if something horrible happens (like I vague out and leave my backpack sitting in a public place, thanks for catching me that one time APM).
Anyhow, I now have $3,000 put away towards a vehicle that’s not old enough to drink. I’m looking at a couple of cars this weekend that satisfy our criteria:
- I need to be able to fit in it
- It must be a manual
- I’d prefer a V6, I’m tired of gutless pusboxes that can’t overtake a tram with a tailwind
- My girlfriend wants a hatch
